Interesting Things To See In Puerto Morelos

An Overview of Puerto Morelos

Puerto Morelos is a small fishing town sequestered behind a large forest of mangroves.  This location is wonderful for its easy access to the second largest barrier reef in the world, The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef.  Access to the reef is extremely cheap here and many diving and snorkel locations are scattered along the shoreline. Aside from the incredible reefs and excellent beaches, there are numerous other interesting things to see in Puerto Morelos.

Jardín Botanico Dr. Alfredo Barrera Marín

Located in the nearby access town of Joaquín Zetina Gasca, this botanical garden contains lush trails with palms, cacti and other native plants. The trail eventually leads to a series of ancient Mayan ruins.

Croco Cun Zoo

Found in the nearby access town of Joaquín Zetina Gasca, this is a reptile zoo targeted mostly at younger guests which allows visitors to touch and feed snakes, crocodiles and other animals.

Faro Inclinado

After being hit by Hurricane Beulah in 1967, this white, blocky lighthouse began to lean, ironically making it a favorite local landmark for photos.

Unico Beach

This beach leads to clear blue waters with numerous umbrellas and seaside restaurants nearby.

National Reef Park Of Puerto Morelos

This astonishing protected area protects the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second largest reef in the world. Guests in Puerto Morelos can take boats out to the reef waters to spot tropical fish, vast coral constructs, sea turtles and other deep sea animals. This is the most popular activity in Puerto Morelos and snorkeling and diving tours from here are notably cheaper than similar tours from nearby Cancún.

Marshlands

While not officially a tourist attraction, the long road leading from Joaquín Zetina Gasca to Puerto Morelos crosses a long patch of marshlands where local wildlife thrives in watery groves.

GoPro Hero9 Black

The GoPro Hero Black is my go to Action camera. I’m not comfortable bringing my cell phone to many wet and rugged locations, so the GoPro does most of my photographic heavy-lifting. The only things I bring in my GoPro kit are the camera, a spare battery and the forehead mount. I upgrade my GoPro once every two years. It was particularly excellent to have during my aquatic tour of Belize.
