An Overview of Kōfu

Kōfu is a city in central Japan, known for it’s excellent views of Mount Fuji and access to the Shosenkyo Valley. The area has several interesting attractions, including Takeda Shrine, Kōfu Castle, Yumura Onsen, Arakawa River hikes, trails leading to Sengataki Waterfall and nearby Mount Rakanji. As an excellent, laid-back city known for its access to nature and Fuji, there are many interesting attractions in Kōfu Japan.

Takeda Shrine

This is a beautiful shrine dedicated to the kami of Takeda Shingen. The shine hosts an annual celebration on April 12th each year, the anniversary of Shingen’s death.

Kōfu Castle

This is a pleasant public park with a scenic white castle built in the 16th-century by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The partially reconstructed castle is surrounded by beautiful Sakura trees.

Yumura Onsenkyo 

Found in Kōfu, this is a hot springs resort with over 1,200 years of history.

Arakawa River

Flowing through Kōfu, the Arakawa River has several walking trails within the city as well as much more beautiful hiking routes leading out of the urban space. The river passes numerous, glorious outdoor scenic locations, including the Shosenkyo Gorge Trail with large boulders and white waters. There’s also the 98-foot-tall Senga Falls, the serene Lake Motosu near the base of Fuji along with several other routes.

North Side of Fuji

Kōfu is excellent for accessing attractions on the North Side of Mount Fuji. This includes Saiko Iyashi-no-Sato Nenba (Traditional Japanese Village), which operates as a beautiful outdoor museum in the shadow of Fuji-san. The amazing Tatego-Hama Beach offers peaceful waters that often reflect Fuji on clear days. The Aokigahara National Forest, blanketed in moss in the deep summer, is also accessible from Kōfu. Visitors may also appreciate the Motosu Wind Cave, formed from an ancient lava tube and the photogenic Momiji Tunnel, created by curving, green foliage in the summer.

Mt. Kurodake

This is one of the highest mountains surrounding the handsome Fuji Five Lakes, offering spectacular, uninterrupted views of Mt. Fuji from above the clouds.

Lake Kawaguchi

Located near the town of Fujikawaguchiko, this is the second largest of the Fuji Five Lakes. The lake is exceptionally beautiful and the most easily accessible of the Fuji Five Lakes.

Kawaguchiko Music Forest

Located on the banks of Lake Kawaguchi, this is a European-influenced garden space with an antique music-box museum, occasional music performances and several vintage organs.

L’heure Vide

This is an excellent, small crêpe café found in Kōfu.
