An Overview of Turda
Turda is a small city located in Romania. The town is notable for it’s enormous salt mine, Salina Turda. The massive underground chasm of carved rock once secured salt-production in the region for years. For modern visitors, the salt mines are located somewhat outside of the city. There are several other small restaurants, cafés and walking paths along with a few interesting things to do in Turda. The best way to reach Turda from more populous cities, such as Cluj-Napoca, is by bus.
Advice When Visiting Turda
Morning busses from Cluj-Napoca to Turda cost around 13 Lie. The drive time is just under an hour.
Salina Turda is located outside the city of Turda. Walking there may take upwards of an hour, but taxis are affordable, costing about 20 Lie.
Salina Turda is a wonderful sight, but due to its depth, it can be a bit chilly. It is recommended to bring a jacket. Additionally, salt flakes are found on virtually every surface in Salina Turda. Wearing black or navy clothes is unwise, as white smears will appear.
The bus leaving from Turda to Cluj-Napoca does NOT necessarily leave from the same station. Information desks at both stations can inform visitors of the best bus to take, but generally arrival and departure points rely largely on timing.
Romanians are generally very good at speaking English. Finding English speakers for directions is quite easy, though there are not many places with English-written information.

Salina Turda
This is an amazingly large centuries-old salt mine located deep underground outside of Turda, complete with an amuseument part and numerous historical facts. The underground site was used for several movies, most notably a Batman film.
Cheile Turzii
This is a beautiful hiking area near Turda with large white cliffs and many of Romania’s pristine forests. It’s located a half-hour or so outside of the city.
Castelul Corvinilor (Corvins’ Castle)
This is a stunningly gorgeous display of Romanian castle construction. The castle is an excellent day-trip from Cluj-Napoca.
