An Overview of Ohrid

Church of Saint John the Theologian
Often called Kaneo or Saint John at Kaneo, this is a picturesque Orthodox church overlooking Kaneo Beach and the wider spread of Lake Ohrid. The beautiful building is dedicated to John of Patmos, the writer of the Biblical Revelation.
Mount Galičica
This is an impressive mountain situated on the border between the Republic of Macedonia and Albania. The mountain separates two large lakes, Lake Ohrid to the West and Lake Prespa to the East. The mountain is known for a snow-capped peak, hiking trails, a paragliding launch point and Biosphere Reserve.
Samoil’s Fortress
Otherwise known as the Ohrid Fortress, Samoil’s Fortress is made of a long series of ruined walls commissioned by an 11th-century tsar, complete with ramparts, gates and towers.
Church of Saints Clement and Panteleimon
This is a large and beautiful church attributed to Saint Clement of Ohrid. The structure is known for it’s unique “stacked” appearance, low walls and beautiful views. It’s part of the Plaoshnik archeological site.
Old City Park
This is a large, hilly park area to the west of Ohrid. It’s home to numerous walking trails, paved routes, lake overlook points and shady cliffs. The park also contains Plaošnik or simply Plaoš, an archaeological site and holy place of Ohrid below Samuil’s Fortress.
Ohrid City Park
This is a beautiful city park with low hedges, sidewalks following the edge of the lake, numerous willow trees and several monuments. The park is easy to reach in the city’s center.
Port of Ohrid
This charming, tiny port offers rides across the lake. There are boats which visit various small settlements around the lake, which can be a swifter method of exploring than hiking or driving on mountain roads.
Ancient Macedonian Theatre of Ohrid
This theater which is still in use was constructed during the Hellenistic Period. The structure, which was built in 200 BCE, has commanding views overlooking the most beautiful parts of Ohrid as well as an artful, ruined wall.
Beach Labino
While there are many quiet and lovely beaches around Ohrid, this one is a small, rocky beach with a serene vibe hidden away from the town by cliffs and a large hill.
Ohrid City Square
The main city square of Ohrid holds the city’s central plaza space with a statue of St. Clement of Ohrid and various small restaurants.
Old Swimming Court
This is a simple, narrow pedestrian dock leading into Lake Ohrid. It’s a good place to enjoy watching birds, spotting minnows and observing sunsets and sunrises around the town.
The Bay of Bones
This small bay to the south of Ohrid contains a large archaeological site of prehistoric dwellings. The site contains a reconstructed village of stilt-houses containing Bronze and Iron Age items recovered from Lark Ohrid.
Ohrid Boardwalk
This small boardwalk space to the West of Ohrid skims over the surface of the water leading towards Kaneo fishing village. It’s a scenic walk, especially with cliffs, birds and fish found in the small walking area.
Pelister National Park (Day Trip)
This is a popular day trip from Ohrid, leading to a pristine national park filled with mountain lakes and pine forests.
Bitola (Day Trip)
This is a tranquil and lovely city filled with a casual atmosphere. It’s only an hour drive from Ohrid.
