Săpânța is a Romanian town found in the northernmost portion of the country, near the Ukrainian border. The town is known for it’s numerous religious structures, which are built in a unique wooden-Orthodox style. Many of the narrow main streets of Săpânța are tailored for tourism, so there are many stalls selling honeycombs, street-snacks and souvenirs. There are several unique things to do in Săpânța.

Merry Cemetery 

This is a unique cemetary filled with bright blue crosses with additional paintings depicting the lives of the graveyard’s residents. The nearby church, Biserica Nașterea Maicii Domnului, is considered one of the most beautiful Orthodox churches in the entire country for its bright interior, gilded mosaics and ornate-tiled roof.

Peri-Săpânţa Monastery 

This is towering wooden church surrounded by peaceful woods. The old, traditional monastery buildings are beautiful to behold and hold many ornate, well-preserved carvings.

Biserica Greco-Catolica Săpânța

This is a fully wooden, rather picturesque church in the town of Săpânța. The area between this church and the Merry Cemetery is crammed with tourist stalls and snacks to eat. The honeycomb sold in this area is quite good.

Memorial to the Victims of Communism and of the Resistance 

Located in the nearby boarder city of Sighetu Marmaţiei, this harrowing monument details the grim history of Romanians during the Soviet Union occupation of the country.
