An Overview of Campeche

Also known as the Rainbow Town, Campeche is an interesting city expanding well beyond its old town borders.  The buildings in the city center are defined by narrow cobbled roads and houses painted every color under the sun.  Further along are numerous churches, unique restaurants and tall spires.  The town is also famous for its anti-piracy wall which rings the city and may be walked along.  The wall was never tested, as piracy subsided in the region just after its construction. With it’s shoreline views, beautiful architecture and numerous eateries, there are many unique things to do around Campeche.

La Maria Cocina

This is a spectacular specialty restaurant near the Old Town of Campeche which serves seafood tacos, artisanal guacamole and crisp drinks.

Plaza de la Independencia

This is a large greenspace ringed by some of Campeche’s most iconic features including the Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Inmaculada Concepción, the Centro Cultural Casa No. 6 and the Museo El Palacio.

Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception

This is the twin-spired cathedral residing in the Old Town portion of Campeche. The Cathedral dates back to 1540 after the city was successfully conquered by San Francisco de Campeche. The structure required nearly 2 centuries to be built.

Fuerte de San José

This unique hillside fort is a semi-subterranean creation, half-sunken into hilltop fortifications with a moat-like gap surrounding its cannon-covered walls.  The drawbridge and entryway to the hill is a curvy route preventing angles of straight fire and enemy soldiers would likely have to slog uphill the entire time to reach the base of the fortifications.

59 Calle

This is a popular street found in the Old Town are. 59 Calle is especially well known for the diverse and traditional food options found here.

Fuentes Marinas – Poesia del Mar

Located right next to the sea, these fountains area a series of musical water jets which perform light-and-water shows in the evening. The 20-meter-high water performances with different shades of lights and songs lasts for 15 minutes and begins promptly at 8 PM.

These three or four parallel trails following the seaside make up a waterfront promenade with numerous monuments. It’s a popular location for jogging, cycling and sunsets. Several monuments found along the route include the Plaza 4 de Octubre, the Novia del Mar statue, and the distinct Obelisco.

Baluarte de San Francisco

These are a series of staircases leading up to the anti-piracy gates overlooking the Old Town portion of the city. While the anti-piracy walls surround most of the Old Town area, there are only a few locations where visitors can climb to the top.

Campache Tarpon

This is a popular tourist activity which offers fly-fishing for baby tarpon found in the Caribbean. The tours often drift through the nearby mangrove forests.

Bazar Artesanal Campeche

This is a state-run artistic and cultural shopping center with unique artworks and hand-crafted goods within.

Jardin Botanico Xmuch’haltun

This is a small, quaint garden with numerous Mexican native plants protected by a towering thick walls of stone nearly 20 feet high. The garden is quiet to walk through and doesn’t see many crowds.

Puerta de Mar

These are the old fortification arches leading to the Old Town portion of Campeche.

Balurte de San Carlos

This is a weathered 17th-century stone fortress with an attatched basement prison. The fortress now houses a series of small exhibits in the City Museum.

Found slightly to the north of Campeche, this is a large Maya archaeological site with a remarkably well-preserved main temple and excellent overviews of the surrounding countryside.

Ex-Templo de San Jose

This is a Jesuit-built baroque church dedicated to Saint Joseph with high towers and a beautifully-lit interior.

Baluarte de San Pedro

These are the northern part of the anti-piracy walls of Campeche. They overlook a major road and some of the city’s more modern districts.
