An Overview of Iquitos

Iquitos is the largest city in the world completely inaccessible by cars or busses.  It lounges deep in the Amazon and represents an aspect of Peruvian culture largely unconnected to the massive infrastructure system in the outside world. The only way to reach Iquitos is by air or boat. As a large urban environment tucked into the deep forests of the Amazon, there are many unique activities in Iquitos.

Centro de Rescate Amazonico 

This is a rescue center dedicated towards Amazon River Marine Life, most especially the preservation and care of river manatees. 

Belen

Belen is an iconic, if weathered part of Iquitos. The southern neighborhood is a somewhat famous slum of floating markets, houses on stilts and riverside life.

Malecon Iquitos

The Malecon is the long bayside walk through Eastern Iquitos, following the river and accessing several of the city’s central urban spaces.

The Iron House Restaurant (Casa de Fierro)

The Iron House is a locally famous restaurant housed inside a building showcasing Gustave Eiffel-designed structure which uses arched, metal walls made from a prefabricated iron building.

Plaza de Armas 

This is the central plaza of the city, located near the St. John the Baptist Cathedral, the Casa de Fierro and several eateries.

Barco Museum 

This is a riverboat museum which operates out of a retired riverboat. It’s home to displays describing river-boat histroy in regards to the Amazon.

Monkey Island 

This is an animal rescue service dedicated towards jungle primates.

Pilpintuwasi 

This is a secondary wildlife sanctuary and butterfly farm located north of the city.

Piranha Park 

This is a unique park complete with the Amazon River’s most famous flesh-eating fish.
