The World’s Littlest Skyscraper
The 4-story Newby-McMahon Building is the result of a locally famous swindle. As Wichita Falls continued to grow and develop, the city invested in a man who offered to build a new skyscraper office space. The con-artist named McMahon supposedly offered up blueprints where he annotated the building’s size in 480″ inches, as opposed to 490′ feet. During the subsequent legal battle, McMahon won his swindle, as all documents specifically annotated measurements in the aforementioned inches. Supposedly, the con won, McMahon completed the paltry building and pocketed a vast net profit.
Kiwanis Park
Kiwanis Park is a small urban park known for its active prairie dog town amongst playground equipment.
Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge
Located roughly an hour north of Wichita Falls near the town of Lawson, Oklahoma, this is a massive nature preserve and wildlife refuge. Aside from numerous hiking trails and excellent locations for boulder hopping, the park is home to a thriving American bison herd. Other animals in the region include white-tailed deer, black-capped vireo, river otters, prairie dogs and Rocky Mountain elk.
Kemp Center for the Arts
This is a historic building which houses community art classes, three interior galleries and an outdoor sculpture garden.
River Bend Nature Center
This is a large, indoor environmental educational facility.
The Holy City of the Wichitas
Found directly next to the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge in Lawton, this is a series of stacked stones in the shape of arches, castles and small buidlings. While this looks like a series of ancient ruins, this is actually a modern tourist site used to re-enact important Christian events during holidays. The recreated “Holy City” hosts the longest running Easter Pageant in North America.
Bath Lake Medicine Park
This small historic town surrounded by broad rivers and shallow pools is a popular recreation and swimming area near Mount Scott.
