“This world generates an astonishing amount of sound. It’s strange to think that’s rare and most of the universe is dead-silent.” – Old Sean
An English Rotation
After a night in Liverpool getting my bearings, I headed inland towards Manchester, a profound industrial hub in the United Kingdom.
Manchester turned out to be a mildly fun little detour with a truly excellent nightlife. I spent most of my day rotating around the canal area in the city center.
A big part of wandering around the city involves getting used to brick buildings, old canals, tiny alleys and plenty of noise. After a few weeks in Ireland, I had forgotten how loud a modern urban environment could be.
I wouldn’t call Manchester pretty, exactly, but it does feel authentic and there’s a grinding energy around the place.
Events Visiting Manchester
Sadly, my time spent visiting Manchester wasn’t interesting from a narrative perspective. The places I visited, I didn’t go into unless they were free. I spent a lot of time sampling restaurants, but these were decent, unremarkable places.
Walking along the canals was nice enough through the day, but not an exceptional experience.
Near the end of the evening, I went out and visited a bar and a club, which was electrifying but not novel by any means.
It was a pleasant, somewhat banal visit. If I were to spend a day out showing someone the local sights around my home town, I imagine the feeling would’ve been similar.
As things stand, I’m off to Birmingham in the morning.
So until then,
Best regards and excellent trails,
Old Sean

Merino Wool Travel Buff
I often travel with a piece of equipment called a “buff” or “magic scarf.” This simple tube of stretchy fabric is the ultimate multitool. It can be a sleeping mask, a head covering, ear covers in cold weather or a scarf. I highly recommend the Multiuse Merino Wool Travel Buff. The two I’ve used have lasted since 2016. They’re versatile, tough, handy and machine-washable.
